Antigone
Sophocles · c. 441 BC
The three Theban plays
In the order the story runs — which is not the order they were written:
- Antigone
Not a trilogy, whatever the covers say. Aeschylus wrote those as single works staged in one morning; these three were written decades apart, each competing alongside other plays now lost, and they do not always agree with one another on the details. The dates give it away — the play that ends the story is the one Sophocles wrote first, and the one that ends the sequence was staged after he died.
